Sermon Manuscript

\ Intro \\

The goal of this sermon series is to look at the great wisdom for us found in the book of 1st Peter. We have learned the

-Basics of salvation in Christ alone.

-Your new identity in Christ, is a royal priesthood of believers

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

-Your new identity in Christ should be marked by humble submission to all.

-A holy lifestyle is the best testimony.

-Last week we looked at the fact that, We need to be ready to give a testimony.

1st Peter 3:15, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”

This doesn’t mean you have all the answers, rather it means you are ready to speak from your heart about the hope you have in Jesus Christ.

Have you spoken about Christ this last week to someone? Bring Jesus up in your conversations as much as possible. The more you direct people toward the person of Jesus Christ, the more they will have the answers they need for a successful life here on this earth and in the eternity to come.

Jesus gives us everything we need to be successful now and forever

Jesus is the focus of everything because Jesus is handling everything for you.

Jesus Christ is God in human flesh. He is real he is alive and he is handling everything for you. Will you trust in Him today is the real question?

Jesus not only has handled your salvation, by paying for your sins on His cross of suffering. He has not only handled your eternity by designing an incorruptible resurrected body, just like his resurrected body. This body you will inherit for all of eternity to be the dwelling place of your spirit.

Jesus, has also given you the blueprints for life. Teaching you how to receive a new born again spirit. Teaching you how to keep your new spirt strong, and growing, through the renunciation and refusal of things that destroy your born again spirit. As you learn to input things that feed your new spirit.

Jesus takes care of you at every facet (angle) of your life.

\\\  story of a kids mom \

Little Johnny had the best mom ever. She was fair and kind and loved to plan things out. On a typical day, little Johnny’s mom would wake early and prepare breakfast for her son, she would lay out clean pressed clothes and prepare lil Johny’s lunch the night prior to the school day.

She was also sure to help Johny with any homework he would have the day before and have his backpack ready to go for him in the morning.

Little Johnny was one of the top students at his elementary school and all he had to do is wake up an hour before school started, take a bath and get cleaned up putting on the clothes that his mom had laid out.

Sit down and eat the warm breakfast his mom had prepared.

Then put on his backpack with all his homework and books that had been prepared the night before.

Then off to school. No hastle, no trouble, everything well prepared for him to have success all day at school.

This little school child was the most prepared he could ever be for the difficulty of school because he had a good parent who looked after every detail, to help Him plan for success.

Church, Jesus is better than little Johnny’s mom. He has literally prepared for you. He has thought of everything for your life and will gladly help you through every stage of your life. He has left nothing out. He is the master engineer and designer of all of creation…do you think he can help you out? He is waiting to.

Jesus has planned everything for us. Trust Him, follow Him, He has thought of everything.

Do you that think that this plan would not include the most difficult part of your life?

Of course it does. Jesus, knows what your greatest difficulties will be on this earth and has planned for them all! To teach you and lead you through each one!

Open your Bibles to 1Peter 4:1-6

1Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. 2As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. 3For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. 4They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you. 5But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

\\ Jesus has planned for everything \\\

First of we see Jesus plan is so perfect it involves the number one issue of us on earth, suffering.

Christ didn’t come to take our suffering away. (He came to take our sin away.)

1) He came to suffer with us.

Vs 1. Christ suffered in the body

2) He suffered in the body now we must arm ourselves with the same attitude.

To often our expectations are wrong so we get disappointed.

There will be sufferings in the body. Guaranteed. The Bible says so. We are suppose to arm ourselves ready and expectant to suffering, physically, emotionally, even mentally. There will be sufferings in this body, whatever form they take for you may vary, but you will definitely have them.

So since we must suffer, just like everyone on the earth must, isn’t it a good idea to suffer for righteousness.

It’s pretty much like God is saying, choose how you will suffer. Jesus, came and suffered for the sake of righteousness. Now you get to choose as well.

You can suffer for sinful choices you make and also for righteous choices you make.

\ example of how haley suffers is a testimony \

Now, this hits a nerve, because my beautiful wife Haley has been suffering in the body with a kidney stone recently.

Do I want to just pray and have it go away! Yes of course, and I have done that many times and still it remains.

So what should I think? Does God not care? Yes of course he cares but look very closely at suffering in this scripture and see that it is often used as a tool to teach us.

Suffering in the body is most often used as a tool to teach us, and help us be unable to sin.

Vs. 1 He who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin.

The point is very clear…sin equals destruction and having any sin in your life is much worse than any suffering that your body can have.

God is blessing you if He allows you to suffer in the body and that suffering pushes sin out of your life.

And if there is no willful sin in your life, then He teaches you how to give a righteous testimony in the midst of your suffering. Example: Haley’s kidney stone, Micah’s autism.

You should thank God for that ailment. All of us who have suffered physically understand this. That when you are in pain in your body, as a Christian, it is very very difficult to have any appetite for any type of sin.

\\ my example as a new Christian \\\

I learned this at age 18 when God allowed me to get very sick for a summer. I was so sick for two months straight right after I got saved, that I could not continue in my old habits of hanging out with my old friends from high school.

All I had the energy to do was sit at home and try to rest. I couldn’t go out. I couldn’t get into trouble. In fact I thought I was dying so my physical suffering led me to do a lot of soul searching.

Whether we like it or not. The struggles and hardships in the physical body can cause us to do a lot of soul searching, which in the end is the most important thing for us.

God wants to thoroughly purge us from any sin, and He will most definitely use physical suffering to do that.

Look at the apostle Paul as a prime example, he was given a thorn in his flesh to keep him from getting prideful. Given something physical to keep him from getting something bad spiritually.

2 Corinthians 12:7-10  (NIV) 7 or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Jesus uses our physical sufferings to help stop us from sinning. He died so that we would sin no more, and that is so He will do whatever it takes to help us walk on that holy path.

Jesus has thought of everything for us….He considers every detail. His plan is all inclusive.

\\ Suffering is part of the package at the all inclusive resort of this life

Suffering is part of the package at the all inclusive resort of this life Jesus, has provided an all inclusive plan for your salvation.

Stop trying to dodge it. Rather, learn to live righteous and holy through it all.

\\ Transition to those before us \\\

Remember Jesus has planned out everything and will help.

Well, what about those who have never heard the good news, what about those who died before Jesus came, how does Jesus great plan involves those people?

I’m glad you asked. It’s a partial mystery how Jesus is handling all the unique cases that may be involved in salvation, but He is handling them. We don’t get the full details but we do get enough to see clearly, the point, Jesus is in full control of every detail.

Look at verse 6.  1Peter 4:6

6For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

This is most likely referencing those who lived before Jesus time who, lived by the Faith of Abraham, yet could not fully grasp the Gospel of Jesus and the cross of His suffering, because Jesus hadn’t come yet.

Clearly Jesus, spoke His gospel message to them as well, even though they had died before He came!

What about even evil spirits in hell, does God’s plan even include them? You wonder about how the gospel is proclaimed and what angels and demons do with the gospel. Well the good news of Jesus Christ is that He even proclaimed to the disobedient fallen angels who are were imprisoned in hell, his Truth of eternal life.

If you look back in 1 Peter 3:19-20

19 After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah.

This proclamation of what He did was to their final judgement, not to their salvation.

See the Gospel is only Good News to those who would obey it.

But to those who have no desire to humble themselves before the living Creator God, then the gospel message is their death sentence.

The Gospel is central to everything in life. If you cannot obey the Gospel then you cannot live.

Jesus is in control, and His Gospel, Good News message, is the benchmark for life and death.

It is the most important message for all of eternity. Do you know it?

\\\\ Transition \\\\

We must obey The Gospel. 1 Peter 4:17…

Do we know it well enough to obey it.

Here is the good news…Let’s this last portion of scripture in view of what you know about obeying the Gospel message.

Our eternal purpose and destiny is what is at stake…Let’s continue reading.

Let’s continue reading in 1 Peter 4:7-11

7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. 8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

We see that the end is near.

Peter wrote this 2,000 years ago, was Peter a liar? Is the Bible false?

First of near in the grand scale of eternity, can easily be 2,000 years. When you think of millions and millions of years in eternity you realize short 2,000 years really is. The end is near.

And Peter says this because it is a crucial mindset. That

Christ’s second return is imminent. Jesus can take His church (rapture) at any moment.

\\ Result \\

Now if all this is true. If this is the reality you are a part of. If you wake up from your false realities that you stay absorbed in most of the week and open your eyes to the fact that this is the true reality!

This is what the devil does not want you to see!?

Your time is very short. How should you live then?

Look at verse 7:

1) be alert, sober mind… why? to pray.

2) Above all, love each other deeply.

Vs 8

“Love covers over a multitude of sins.”

This word “cover” in the Greek literally means to envelop. Wrap up, cover, or surround completely. To surround on all sides…

There is this enemy force of evil..You were once a part of it. But God in His great love through Jesus, has surrounded you on every side with love. Love and then more love. That any who would dare could accept His love, have there enemy status revoked, and begin to love as well.

This is the gospel right here!

Jesus covered over sins, now we are to follow His example and pour out His love to others!

We are to mimic Jesus life on this earth. Loving like He loved. Serving like He served. Caring like He cared. Pouring out our life like He did. And expecting suffering to come. Preparing our souls to suffer well, because we are so focused on Him who suffered for us.

James 5:20 (NIV)

20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

Finally, since the end of all things is near:

9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others.

Are you using your gifts to serve others?

-Do you have the gift of a strong body and labor? Are you laboring for others?

-Do you have the gift of mental strength and ingenuity? Are you helping others solve their problems?

-Do you have the gift of finances? Are you helping bless others with those finances?

-Do you have the gift of teaching? Are you teaching others the Truth of the Good News?

Gifts here extends to anything you can do that is beneficial. It isn’t referring to some pastoral gift, it’s just referring to any talent or ability that you have!

Any talent, ability, or skill that you have is a gift God has given you. Are you using them for Christ and His Kingdom?

If not, what are you waiting for? The end is near, and you will be judged according to how you obeyed Christ and built His Kingdom.

\\\ Worship team come back \\
